Richard Colman’sinspiration for his upcoming solo exhibition “Human Replacement Project” seems to spring from his current detachment from the human race. Colman’s new works are a grittier, intensely graphic and prolific display of watercolor and ink. The exhibit will be unveiled at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery, located at 170 South La Brea Avenue, Los Angeles90036 on Saturday, April 21, 2007 from 8 – 11 pm and is free and open to the public. All ages are welcome.
Over the course of his career, Colman has blended haunting scenes of debauchery with a gentle sense of humor. The exhibition “Human Replacement Project” shows Colman’s paintings like a modern-day collection of hieroglyphics. Pyramids of pleasure with striking symmetry and androgynous beings in finely tailored suits leave much to the imagination.
Colman, often known for his naughty stylings, is a master of distraction. The scandalous, “XXX” nature of many of his pieces seem all but swallowed up by his use of space through strategically placed patterns, ornate detail and obscured symbolism.
We are humble disciples of pop culture gauging the countercultural zeitgeist for the next big thing/artist/band/mobile food truck. Graffiti, fashion, bicylces, photography, architecture, music, art, design and makeover scenes in movies: these are a few of our favorite things. We are also big fans of the Sound of Music, the movie and in general.
